How to become a KAA School

A KAA affiliate student/school is a first step to become a full-fledged “Gaylord” method student/individual.  In addition to the set of requirements for these folks, it’s also a way of both sides to get to know each other and vet each other out.  This means the affiliate candidate will be getting to know the KAA Board of Directors, the Great Grandmaster/s and the rest of the Gaylord Method Kajukenbo Community. An affiliate school will not have the right to teach the affiliate requirements outside of their school or claim Kajukenbo in any way shape or form other than calling themselves an “affiliate” KAA student/school. There will be a certificate at both the student and school level.  The requirements taught to the KAA affiliate school will be the first six punching tricks, first six grab counters and the first six pinyons.  The KAA affiliate will be expected to teach these requirements to their students as this is an important way to see how much they understand the Gaylord Method techniques.  There is already a DVD with the first 6 punching attach & grab counters shown below.

Proposal in how to become a Gaylord Method Kajukenbo student/school

Rev0.9

  1. For a student/school to become a full-fledged KAA Gaylord Method student/school they will need to learn the rest of Gaylord Method, that includes the xx number of punching attacks, the xx number of grab counters and the 14 PinyIntroduction:

This proposal is for those folks that are not Kajukenbo.  For these folks that would like to become part of the Kajukenbo Association of America (KAA) and Gaylord Method there are two classifications, the first is becoming a KAA affiliate student/school and the second is to become a full-fledged “Gaylord Method” individual/school.  The candidate must be sponsored by a Grandmaster or a Professor within “Gaylord Method”.  The sponsor will need to submit an endorsement letter to the KAA Board of Directors that will kick off the vetting out process where the sponsor will communicate to the KAA Board of Directors the standing, character and potential of the candidate/s.  It will be the responsibility of the sponsor to teach the KAA Affiliate requirements to the student/school.

What is a KAA Affiliate Student/School?

I cannot play the above DVD, can anyone else?  I am wondering if we can make a new DVD with what is on this one and add the Pinyons.

The KAA Affiliate process should take about one year to learn the KAA Affiliate requirements.  In that years’ time there should be two checkpoints.  The checkpoints include inviting someone whom the KAA board deems has good assessment skills to travel to meet the person or to visit the school and get a feel for them or their school.  The assessment characterized by this person will be one of the inputs if the KAA Affiliate wishes to become a full-fledged Gaylord Method student/school.

What is a Full Fledged Gayord Method Student/School?

If the KAA Affiliate student/school wants to become a full-fledged KAA Gaylord Method student/school hey will need to further their education with their sponsor and learn the rest of the system.  It will be up to the sponsor to decide when they are ready to be presented to the GGM and board for acceptance.  This would be done at the yearly KAA picnic.  If there is a reason the GGM or a board member disagrees with accepting someone to become a full-fledged KAA Gaylord Method a special board meeting (as outlined in the bylaw 4.9 “Special Meetings”) may be called to discuss the issue and upon fully vetting out the process and a vote is made, all parties MUST accept the vote.  This will be the one and only chance that anyone who doesn’t agree they should be endorsed to air their reasoning as to why they shouldn’t be a full-fledged Gaylord Method student/school.  There needs to be complete transparency here because we must maintain the highest standards in character and respect as there is a Gaylord Method culture and we do not want someone who will tarnish the Gaylord name.

  1. Sponsorship
    1. Sponsors are people willing and have accepted the responsibility of being the representative of the person or school that wants to become a KAA Affiliate or KAA Gaylord Method entity.  This includes being listed and available for this function.
    2. When our website is up and running there needs to be a section describing the process of how to become a KAA Gaylord Method martial artist or school including how to get in touch with a sponsor.
    3. A sponsor should be either a Grandmaster or Professor however any black belt rank can recommend someone or a school.
    4. It will be the responsibility of the Sponsor to completely vet out the candidate to be recommended to become a KAA Affiliate or a KAA Gaylord Method martial artist/school.
      1. The vetting out process will be but not limited to character, training time, martial knowledge and willingness to learn what their sponsor outlines for them.
    5. I believe the process to become a KAA Affiliate person/school should be at least one year.  If the KAA Affiliate wants to become a full-fledged Gaylord Method student/school it will be up to the sponsor to establish a timeline.
  2. What should the candidate be taught?
    1. The need to learn our history.  I don’t know if there is a document outlining Great Grandmaster Gaylord full history.  History should include:
      1.  What year did he start training, where and how long?
      2. Whom was his instructor?
      3. What year did he come to the mainland?
      4. What and where was his first school?
      5. Whom were his first black belts?
      6. What was training like?
      7. What year was the KAA formed?
      8. Other?
    2. Curriculum
      1. For a student/school to become a KAA Affiliate they will need to learn the first six punching attacks, the first six grab counters and the first six Pinyons.  Within that years’ time to become a KAA Affiliate student/school the sponsor needs to check in with the instructors and check how the curriculum is being disseminated and expressed and if it meets Gaylord Method standards. The KAA board of directors will trust the sponsors assessment on this.
